Welcome your baby into the world with a mantra

A new baby is always a time of great joy for a family. To celebrate this blessing, the Hindu tradition suggests a mantra should be chanted to your new baby in a beautiful and intimate ritual.

Last year a young couple chose Fivelements for their honeymoon. During their stay they took part in a private Agni Hotra Fire Blessing Ceremony, during which the priest gave them a mantra from the Vedas to bless their baby when it was born.

According to the priest the Maha Mritun Jaya Mantra should be chanted by the father three times into each ear of the newborn baby:

MAHA MRITUN JAYA MANTRA

OM TRYANBAKAM JAYAMAHE,

SUGANDHIM PUSTI VARDHANAM

URVARUKAM IVA BANDHANAM,

MRTYOR MUKSIYA MAMRTAT.

OM AYUR DEHI DHANAM DEHI

VIDYAM DEHI MAHESVARI

SAMASTA MAKILAM DEHI

DEHIME PARAMISVARI.

The mantra prays to Lord Shiva to keep the baby healthy, successful and prosperous and help it live a long, full life.

The popular Gayatri Mantra can also be chanted to the baby too:

GAYATRI MANTRA

OM BHUR BHUWAH SWAH

TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM

BHARGO DEVASYA DIMAHI

DIYO YONAH PRACODAYAT.

This mantra prays that the baby may have an inspired life full of understanding and enlightenment.

Both offer a beautifully spiritual way to welcome your new baby into the world.
