Through diverse (though deeply intertwined) practices, yoga helps us nurture a heightened sense of awareness through our senses that can lead to a wondrously surprising ability to be present in the moment. To move in the world with more flexibility and to learn to free ourselves from the physical and emotional limitations we yearn to release, yoga can help us find the freedom of spirit and joyfulness within that we all crave. The practice of yoga offers blessed ease and comfort in the body and peacefulness in the mind. More than just exercise, it is a path to personal well-being, expanded consciousness and a renewed sense of self-acceptance. Dedicated practice can lead not only to flexibility of body, but resilience of mind; not only to strength of body, but courage of character; not only to physical balance, but emotional trust, groundeness, stability of spirit, profound humbleness, letting go of burdens and a sense of universal compassion for others and the world.

Our yoga teachers come from unique backgrounds and experiences. They are dedicated to sharing the wisdom of yoga in its fullness as a generous and evolving ancient system from their own personal and wholehearted practices. They have experienced yoga’s nourishment through their own lives; during their own painful, dangerous and challenging experiences and remain somehow passionate to pass on valuable life skills; letting go of judgement and pain, accepting love, sitting still, healing from the past, gaining patience and quieting our monkey minds.

Yoga for Calmness and Strength through Movement, Breath and Flow.

The Yoga Synergy method was developed by Australian physiotherapists Simon BorgOlivier and Bianca Machliss. A practitioner for 50 years, Simon blended his profound knowledge of classical hatha yoga, modern medical science and Chinese internal martial arts into original natural-movement sequences. It merges poses and breath work into a hypnotic moving meditation that creates a surprisingly grounded sensation of physical/ emotional calmness. It encourages strength and flexibility whilst being safe and effective for everyone. Its flowing movements release the nervous system and help our bodies turn stress into pure and lasting joy.

Mardi’s yoga classes restore comfort and trust in our bodies by working gently with each students’ individual needs and interests. She teaches natural dynamic movements and poses that coordinate the body and breath encouraging greater blood flow (healing) and functional body alignment. Working honestly and slowly with our selves as they are at the present moment is often a relief and brings an easy breath and often a sense of humour and lightness about being a human being that is constantly going through changes. The class is always restorative and leaves students with a calm mind and a deep sense of wellbeing.

Suitable for all ages, levels of fitness, beginners and experienced yogis who wish to deepen their practice.

Mardi Kendall, our Wellness Liaison and Resident Yoga Teacher, has 50 years of yoga experience and 30 years of teaching. Yoga brought her back into life after a car accident at age of fourteen. Her dedication to a life of love and service led her to study with the world’s modern root yoga teachers; BKS Iyengar, T.K.V. Desikachar and with Simon BorgOlivier for 30 years. She directed a pioneering yoga school in Australia where she codeveloped Sydney’s first comprehensive teaching training in 1990. Her classes are known for their compassion and depth combined with playfulness, humour, inclusiveness, body/ mind understanding and practical, fun ways to integrate yoga into daily life. She has taught many retreats, in the US, Australia and West Africa.

Kundalini Yoga, known as the Yoga of Awareness, as taught by Yogi Bhajan PhD is a dynamic blend of postures and movement (asana and kriya), therapeutic stretching, mantra, breathing (pranayama), meditation and relaxation. Using yoga kriyas the teacher leads routines directed towards specific life issues; relieving stress and fosters strength, radiance, confidence and and a return to our essential selves: “happy, healthy, and holy”.

Ananda means joy or bliss, the happiness that is sought in all human feelings and desires. According to Tantra Yoga philosophy, ananda is achieved by illuminating the soul with the radiance of Divine Love within. In this session, Acarya Vibhakarananda Avt. ("Dada"), an enlightened Balinese spiritual teacher, will share insightful teachings based on the ancient philosophy of Tantra (one’s expansive journey into ananda) and a powerful meditation practice for invigorating the mind and soul with compassionate love and devotion. This is an informative session intended to share useful tools for creating greater peace, harmony and happiness in your daily life.

Dada is a warm and compassionate man devoted to a path of love. He began searching for spiritual answers as a young child, and after several years working in the corporate world, Dada’s strong vision for One-ness led him to leave his job and immerse himself in the path of yoga. He went on to pursue training in India as a sanyasin, senior yoga monk. He then began teaching yoga and meditation in Taiwan and Australia and eventually returned to his native island of Bali, bringing his devotional work home. Dada is a gifted teacher of the heart whose commitment to share the wisdom of Tantra continues to support people through gentle transformation and the awakening experience of ananda.

Mindfulness is a process of slowing down and touching deeply into life moment by moment. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and all that you are doing. Utilizing conscious breathing techniques, we focus awareness on the present moment, calmly observing thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations, without forcing, judging, or hiding from anything. We discuss what emerges along the way, allowing for greater self-awareness. Practicing this kind of presence assists you in listening to the still, small voice within you, opening to new experiences, making important changes and wise decisions.

A modern Japanese martial art, Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba and is a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and beliefs. In this session, you will learn the foundation of Aikido from the perspective of harmony or unity of life energy with self, with others and our environments. Through hands on practice, you will come to embody the lessons of harmonizing, centering, peaceful mind, respect, understanding, opening and staying in one’s power – invaluable tools for every day life.

Arie, a native of Yogyakarta (Central Java, Indonesia), fell in love with aikido at Samurai Dojo Bali when he first started practicing in 2006. Through his devoted journey, Arie discovered much more than a martial art. He learned that aikido is an art of peace and a way of life. His passion for aikido led him to train in different dojos to improve his knowledge, skill and understanding about this extraordinary peaceful practice. Arie later founded the Kagura Dojo in Yogyakarta, Central Java and the Terakoya Aikido Dojos in Bali.

"Aikido is a life long practice and a journey of life."

Ristie Darmawar, co-instructor, assists Arie in this dynamic session. With over eight years of dedication and practice, aikido has expanded Ristie’s way of thinking about life. A family physician with a masters in anti-aging medicine and an international certified personal trainer by the International Fitness Professionals Association (IFPA), Ristie has embraced aikido as an integral part of her life.

"It is never too late to start Aikido as it is a lifetime training. Practice with good spirit, respect others and help each other."
