Introducing John Nielsen

We are pleased to welcome John T.G. Nielsen, our newly appointed General Manager & Business Development Executive at Fivelements Bali. A seasoned senior hotelier, John brings solid experience in hospitality and hotel management, having previously worked for Hyatt and Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School in Melbourne, Australia and Suzhou, China, and Les Roches Jin Jiang International Hotel Management College in Shanghai, China.

We caught up with him to find out what he’s most excited about at Fivelements.

How did you come to know Fivelements?

I was introduced to Fivelements via a close friend who was doing some work for Chicco (co-founder of Fivelements), which was the start of a journey from early 2015 to now. Fivelements, Bali has wonderful opportunities to look forward to.

Tell us your story

I’m a multinational hotelier with three passports, who grew up in Denmark with a British mother and Danish father, but has spent the past 20 years based in Melbourne with my family. I have always loved all areas of travel and was lucky to spend a few holidays in some wonderful hotels with my parents, so it was almost natural that my life led me towards the world of global hospitality. Having travelled a fair amount through my career as a keen squash player and an avid fitness user, I have always led a healthy lifestyle, so wellness is very much part of my DNA.

How has your hospitality career been unfolding?

I’ve spent a considerable amount of years in hospitality with leading companies such as Hyatt (for 10+ years), and most recently ran the two iconic hotel schools, Les Roches International School of Hotel Management and Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School in China. I have gained a good understanding of academia and hope to pass the educational aspects of learning on to the team, but also the quality that international hotel companies have achieved. Having lived and work in a high labour cost environment in Australia, the element of having strong systems creates a great work flow for the teams. It helps them achieve results better and more efficiently, so that is a key focus for the total process, which ultimately provides a great guest experience.

Your favourite wellness ritual at Fivelements?

I love Agni Hotra, the total ceremony is a real joy and wonderful element of the ancient Vedic healing wisdom.

You will bring your leadership to various areas of the retreat. What are you most excited about?

The expansion - looking ahead, the key for us is on enhancing the guest experience and completing our expansion to include 10 new sleeping suites (each with plunge pool), including a master honeymoon suite perched high up on a ridge that overlooks the river and rice fields, as well as our new Cuisine for Life™, (professional plant-powered cuisine culinary training kitchen). So we will have a total of 20 suites. I also want to continue the great work undertaken by the co-founders, Chicco and Lahra. With our new partners, Evolution Wellness, we have been given a great chance to take Fivelements Bali into a new phase of growth.

With this, we will be able to accommodate the growing demand, as well as cater to more retreat groups. The launch date for the new suites is slated for December 2019. The new project, or really phase two of Fivelements Bali, represents a wonderful opportunity for the business to re-focus on its core of retreats, growing that market. It also represents excellent opportunities to target the high-end yoga market and small MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference & Events) markets.
